Fake extortionists are using data breaches and ransomware attacks as cover to threaten U.S. companies with releasing or selling supposedly stolen data if they don't get paid.
Sometimes, the actors threaten the message recipient with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack if they don't do what they say in the message.
The people behind this use the name Midnight, and they have been going after U.S. companies since at least March 16.
They have also sent emails pretending to be from ransomware and data extortion gangs, claiming to be the ones who broke in and stole hundreds of gigabytes of important data.
